Event Details
He Āria presents the Twenty-Four Italian Arie Antiche in te reo Māori - a landmark transcreation of one of the most enduring collections in the vocal repertoire. Originally seventeenth-century arias, the collection was compiled and arranged by Alessandro Parisotti in the nineteenth century and is recognised as one of the defining collections of classical vocal repertoire.
The original Italian libretti have been reimagined through te ao Māori, with the kupu grounded in the landscapes, values and worldview of Aotearoa. This approach supports the project's kaupapa: enabling singers, particularly rangatahi Māori, to engage with this repertoire through their own language, culture and identity.
Commissioned by Hawke's Bay's Project Prima Volta (PPV), He Āria is co-led by Anna Pierard and te reo Māori specialist and baritone Kawiti Waetford, and is performed by some of Aotearoa's leading emerging and established artists.
